kyle j

Name:Kyle Johnson

Date of Birth : Sept 14, 1987

Occupation: VP of Engineering at Intelligent (software company)

CrossFitting Since: July 2012

First CrossFit Experience:

Went through OnRamp at CFBT in June 2012 having never touched a barbell, done an air squat, or stepped foot in a gym before. At the start, warmups were tough to get through and I had doubts WODs could be scaled to my level. I quickly realized our coaches could scale anything and it didn’t take long for warmups to seem like actual warmups. I love challenges and seeing progress; I experienced both from the first day of OnRamp and it’s continued through regular Crossfit.

Favorite CrossFit WOD:

Cindy

Favorite Lift:

Back squat. This was the first lift I could do well and we do them regularly enough it’s easy to track/see progress.

Least Favorite WOD:

Anything with overhead squats (overhead shoulder mobility is a weak spot for me).

Favorite CrossFit Moment:

The day I had enough mobility to do front squats properly. PR’d my previous months of attempts by 50lbs in the span of fifteen minutes. :)

Why do you CrossFit:

Initially I was looking to change my largely sedentary lifestyle, but discovered running wasn’t exactly fun.

Crossfit is varied and exciting. Finishing a workout is always an amazing feeling and doing that in the space of an hour–multiple times throughout the week–is great (endorphins!).

Cheat Meal of choice:

Pizza with a good hard cider. Or anything with rosemary bread.

CrossFit Secret:

Eat enough good foods to fuel your body for what you’re doing!

What do you do on your days off:

Enjoy not feeling like I’m eating constantly.

Can’t leave home without:

Phone.

Dream vacation spot:

Anywhere with sunshine and no phone/computer. :)

yoga happy place

Acu-Yoga for CFBT Members

Every Monday starting June 10th at 7:30pm

Penny Brewer, licensed acupuncturist and yoga instructor, will be teaching a 60min yoga class followed by an extended savasana with ear acupuncture!

After yoga practice we rest in savasana (corpse pose), allowing our bodies to integrate the benefits of our practice. To aid in deeper relaxation, two acupuncture needles will be inserted to each ear while students bliss out for 20 minutes. These acu-points help elicit relaxation and bring the body towards homeostasis, producing a balance of energy, hormones and brain activity. They help alleviate stress, pain, tension, anxiety, depression, insomnia, restlessness, and excessive sensitivity.

If you are interested in experiencing acupuncture during savasana, please sign a consent form prior to class. Clean Needle Techniques are implemented. The needles are sterile, one-time use only and disposed of immediately after treatment.

If you hold a “Gold” Membership status, reserve your spot as usual.

 Temporary ‘Uncoached’ Classes  June 3rd-7th

Athletes will still be required to register for class, as this will not be an opportunity to deviate from CFBT’s  programming -or- in effect do your own thing. Expect all uncoached classes to be overseen by Kendra (L1 Trainer) for anyone who may need assistance regarding all things technique-based, scaling, etc… Workout(s) will start and end on time per the needs & demands of the workout. The “uncoached” class times will still start and end on time with a group warm-up;  everyone will start the workout together.  The movements will be ones that are familiar and programmed often.  “Uncoached” simply means there will not be a detailed explanation/education of the movements prior to the workout.

Additionally, all CrossFit Basic and Bootcamp classes will be cancelled Mon-Fri only, however anyone holding this membership-type will instead be granted access to our June 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th 5:30pm & 6:30pm  regular CrossFit classes.

Lo and Brandon

He has more funny stories than a dog has hair and he drinks more coffee than a trucker on a 10 day haul, yes, it is Brandon! He coaches the Dawn Patrol, a.k.a the 6 am class, and has led most of our On-Ramp and CrossFit Basics Classes since 2011.

Brandon successfully passed all tests and  accepted a position with the Seattle Police Department. He has been working hard towards this over the past year!

He has so much drive and passion for this line of work and we couldn’t be more happy for him! We are very proud of you Brandon and all your hard work and dedication to us and the SPD.

Lo, our Memberships Coordinator, will be pursuing her passion for food! We thank her for all her hard work, patience, and fantastic attitude towards all the members and wish her the best of luck and success in her endeavors.

You will both be missed!

MIND.SET.GO.

[before you warm up, chalk up, or pick anything up, remind yourselves of a few truths]

I am not here to prove anything other than my own growth.

I will support and encourage everyone around me knowing we are not meant to do this alone.

The stronger I am in here the better I will be out there.

The past does not define who I am right now.

We CrossFit because we believe in change.

mind over matter

When doubt and negative thoughts start to challenge what we are capable of doing physically; mental stability will command our bodies to work.

In situations that bring you down on your knees, lean you up against a wall, or have you hunched over with your hands on your knees; change your position!

Take yourself out of a defeated position into a power one; weight in the heels, chest up, lumbar curve maintained, and breathe.

Put your body in a position of power; your mind will be compelled to follow.

Name: Val Wright

Date of Birth: June 25, 1974

Occupation: I have my own business helping leaders and companies grow and innovate.

www.valwrightconsulting.com

CrossFitting Since: July 2008

First CrossFit Experience:

I first met Nadia 6 weeks after my first daughter Olivia was born. She was my personal trainer at a local gym. I remember her getting me to do short rounds of a few different functional exercises, at the same time telling me eating oatmeal for breakfast wasn’t healthy and I needed to eat more bacon. I thought I was fit and healthy from boot camp, boxercise, bodypump, yoga and the occasional run but in those initial sessions with Nadia I really struggled to do basic functional movements and it was exhausting me and pushing my body like I had never before. I was hooked. Then Nadia started a Crossfit class a quiet corner of my regular gym. We would do sprints between the weight machines, box jump on step aerobic steps and had to sneak into the yoga class to put our weights away afterwards.  After bending one barbell too many it was time to find a new home, and so the crossfit belltown family grew. Meanwhile a few of us would gather at the local park and do outside WOD’s carrying logs and home made sandbags along the waterfront.  So much fun.

Favorite CrossFit WOD:

Nasty Girls, because when I first started I couldn’t even squat, never mind the hang power cleans or muscle ups. One of my goals this year is getting a muscle up. One day I will do that WOD RX-ed.

Favorite Lift:

Deadlift, probably because I have made the biggest gains in lifting with this one as I have learned to focus on form.

Least Favorite WOD:

I groan if I see wallballs or overhead squats in any workout.

Favorite CrossFit Moment:

2012 Crossfit Games Opens. I got my first toes to bar 48hours before the opens WOD that required them and my first real box jump the day before. This year I got my first chest to bar pull up during 13.5.  Just shows what great coaching can do.

Why do you CrossFit:

People often ask me how I manage with three girls aged 5, 3 & 3, well Crossfit plays a big part in keeping me strong and having a reason to escape sometimes!  All of my lifts have drastically improved and last year I ran my first 10k with my brother without doing any running training at all!!  I have always had problems with my knees, following great advice from the CFBT coaches I can now  squat, lunge and box jump my way through WOD’s.

Cheat Meal of choice:

Wine. Crisps. Cheese.

I eat Paleo most of the time, until I sometimes realize my cheat meals are overtaking my paleo meals!  I try to never forget the 1 in 23 rule that Todd at CFHQ shared when he did a nutrition talk for us.  You can exercise as hard as you like 1 hour a day every day of the year, but you have 23 other hours every day to mess it up by what you put in your mouth.  So true.

CrossFit Secret:

If you have the opportunity to workout, take it, even if you don’t like the WOD. One day you may not have the opportunity.

When I was 7 months pregnant with twins I was on forced bed rest for 9 weeks.  I realized when you don’t have the opportunity to do something you REALLY want to do it. I couldn’t pick up, carry, chase, or walk with my 18month old and I really wanted to. I couldn’t go to Crossfit and I really wanted to. Then I promised myself that there were so many excuses I always made for not exercising or eating healthily and once I had the opportunity again I would take it.

What do you do on your days off:

Day off??? Playing with my girls at the park, the beach, or out on a bike ride.  If I am lucky, a lie in, a day skiing or a day lying by the pool in the sun?….well, I can dream.

Can’t leave home without:

The smallest possible handbag.

Dream vacation spot:

A villa in Europe somewhere sunny for a month where my family and friends from England can come and visit.
