First Memorable CrossFit Experience: My first day at Crossfit Belltown. Like most people, trying new things isn’t easy and it’s absolutely terrifying. I remember going into my first Basics class at CFBT and being completely mortified that I was going to (a) embarrass myself and (b) get hurt. Neither of those things happened, and I had never felt more welcome in my life. I clearly remember the Basics WOD that day which included Kettlebell/Dumbbell swings and box jumps. I was the last one finishing up my box jumps, and it didn’t matter that no one knew me yet or that I was the “new girl”. They were all cheering me on to finish the workout strong. It was an awkward moment at first, but as I finished my last jump, I realized what kept me going was the support and camaraderie of that group and my coach. The community here at CFBT is truly amazing, and I’m so grateful for the encouragement, great coaching and supportive folks I’ve met through this box. They always challenge me to do more and push you to be stronger and better. Since I’ve started Crossfit at CFBT, I’ve accomplished things I never thought possible like handstand push-ups, run my fastest mile (EVER!) and squat more than my bodyweight. And I couldn’t have done it without the CFBT family!

Favorite WOD: Anything with burpees!

Favorite Lift: Clean + Jerk

Least Favorite WOD: Karen…. wall balls to the face. every. single. time.

Favorite CrossFit Moment: The moment I squatted my body weight. I never thought it would be possible, nor did I think I was very strong either. I was so shocked, and when I put the bar back on the rack, I squealed and twirled around with excitement like a kid pretending to be a ballerina. It’s one of my Crossfit milestones!

Why You Do CrossFit: I’ve tried barre, pilates, dance aerobics, and the like. Yes, they were fun workouts with cute outfits, but none have given me what Crossfit has. I choose Crossfit because: (1) There are measurable goals. You have benchmarks and numbers to work towards, rather than the simple “I want to lose weight” reason for working out. (2) It’s amazing what the body can do and how strong it can become. (3) It’s a no fuss, no judgment, give it all you got space.

Favorite Cheat Meal: A cheeseburger with bacon, real French fries (not sweet potato fries) AND Molly Moon’s ice cream. Oh, and if we can throw in fried chicken somewhere there, I’ll gladly take that, too.

CrossFit Secret: Sometimes before a heavy lift or WOD, I do a little dance right to shake off any jitters.

What Do You Do On Rest Days: Mani/pedi + cheat meals + walks either through Discovery Park or Green Lake.

What Can’t You Live Without: My family, main squeeze and friends

Favorite Vacation Spot: Anywhere quiet, away from a big city and near the water. A place to unplug from everything.

First Memorable CrossFit Experience:  The beginning of the crossfit journey – Learning how to do CrossFit the right way because it led to a total life transformation for me.  I observed a very good friend of mine in Singapore go from average fit to what seemed like crazy fit in a matter of a few months.  He told me about this website called www.CrossFit.com, how to download the free exercise demo videos, and the free workouts.  Mostly he was just excited because it was FREE.  So I decided to join him.  It was absolutely the wrong way to start CrossFit!  We sucked, and probably should have hurt ourselves pretty badly!  On top of that, we dropped the weights on the wood floors which made the place very unhappy with us.  We really looked like a couple of idiots in there.  By some stroke of luck, common sense prevailed.  My friend’s old trainer, who had left the very same gym for the exact same offense, had rented some space and equipment from the Singapore Weightlifting Federation to start the very first CrossFit gym in Singapore.  I called him up and signed up for an intro session.  I was one of his first members.  I nearly died the first day just learning air squats.  However, I knew then and there this was something really different.  Upon moving back to the United States a few years later I was so lucky to find CrossFit Belltown.  I walked in one day to meet Eric fighting off some of the street people at the old location.  He had brass knuckles on the desk and he made a point of telling me.  I did not initially know what to make of that.  I discovered later that he is really a very low key guyOn top of that the gym that seemed more like an artists studio.  It took a while for me to really commit to crossfit at Belltown but when I did life really changed.  The last two years have been the most incredible for me.  It is when I discovered how amazing the programming and coaching is at Belltown and that yes programming does matter and I discovered all the amazingly talented and genuine people that work and coach at Belltown.  It really has become my home away from home!

Favorite Lift:  Clean & Jerk

Least Favorite WOD:  Filthy Fifty – It is just too much of everything.  It really hurts and never seems to end!

Favorite CrossFit Moment:  Starting to actually be able to do handstand pushups.  I never thought that would happen.

Why You Do CrossFit:  Well of course, I do it for the challenge. But most of all for the awesome like minded people I have met, and get to hang around with.

Favorite Cheat Meal:  Pepperoni pizza and movie theatre popcorn with tons of butter and salt.

CrossFit Secret:  It pretty much makes my day if I beat all you youngsters in your 20s and 30s in any WOD or lift.

What Do You Do On Rest Days:  Hang out with my kids, my family and my friends, eat food I like, and do anything in the great outdoors.

What Can’t You Live Without:  My three amazing sons Spencer, Connor and Cole.

Favorite Vacation Spot:  I love the European Alps.  There is so much to do (mostly though, anywhere with good company and my boys).

CrossFitting Since: January 2013

First Memorable CrossFit Experience: I participated in my first
CrossFit Open in March of 2013, which wasn’t very long after I
had started CrossFit. When Open Workout 13.2 was announced,
I was so nervous! It was a 10 minute AMRAP of: 5 shoulder to
overhead@75#s, 10 deadlifts, and 15 box jumps. I didn’t think
I could put 75# over my head!! When it came time for me to do
the WOD, I spent almost the entire 10 minutes getting 75#s over
my head 5 times. I had enough time left to quickly squeeze in 6
deadlifts, for a total of 11 reps. During my entire 10 minute struggle, I
remember the elite athletes in my gym – who could have easily done
what I was trying to do – were cheering me on. At the end, they
were genuinely excited that I had scored a measly 11 reps!! This was
the first time that I really felt the power of the CrossFit community and
I’ve been hooked ever since!

Why You Do CrossFit: 9 months later, I redid 13.2 and scored
152 reps! Seeing this type of progress in myself and in others is
absolutely exhilarating! As someone that never made it onto any
athletic teams in school, CrossFit has finally made me feel like an
athlete! I’m able to do things now that I never thought possible. I
also love the amazing coaching we get at CFBT and all the friends
I have made! My 6 am friends are like a family to me!! I just love
CrossFit!!!

Favorite WOD: Any WOD the minute I finish it! Once time is called,
even the most dreaded WODs become the biggest highs!

Favorite Lift: There’s something about the short distance the barbell
travels in a deadlift that really appeals to me.

Least Favorite WOD: Karen. This shorty hates wall balls.

Favorite CrossFit Moment: I was able to do 1 unbanded kipping
pull up for a long time before I could finally string 2 together. I
remember the day I finally did 2 in a row, I got so excited that I flew
off the rig without even trying a third and started dancing! My fellow 6
am friends might remember this

Favorite Cheat Meal: Chicago-style pizza

CrossFit Secret: I secretly feel like a bad-ass now that I can do pull-
ups without a band

What Do You Do On Rest Days: I love doing anything active
outdoors: walking, running, hiking, biking, skiing…cocktails on a nice
patio

What Can’t You Live Without: Music. Thank God Kendra plays
80’s Cardio for me!

Favorite Vacation Spot: Anywhere I get to go with my husband,
Jesse.
