CrossFit Bio

One day in 2010, my husband and I were walking down a sidewalk in downtown Kansas City, MO. It was lunchtime and we came upon a place that had the doors open with music playing and a group of people working hard and having a blast. This was my first glimpse of CrossFit. Shortly after that day, my husband and I tried our first CrossFit workout and we were hooked! We recently moved to Seattle and found CrossFit Belltown. Needless to say, we are thrilled to be a part of the CrossFit Belltown community!

I have been working in the fitness industry since I was 15, first teaching “aerobics” and then progressing to personal training and being an educator for other fitness professionals. I’ve always known that I wanted to help others safely and effectively improve health and wellness through exercise. After receiving my bachelor’s in exercise science and master’s in biomechanics at the University of Kansas, I continued in the business of fitness and accumulated many certifications and credentials, including Pilates and yoga. Recently, I became a Level 1 CrossFit Trainer and I couldn’t be more proud of this achievement. CrossFit is a workout, a community, and a culture that allows people to achieve incredible feats of strength and perseverance that they never realized they possessed. I am passionate about CrossFit because never before have I experienced the unique camaraderie and results that come from CrossFit training, and I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years!

Yoga Philosophy

One my favorite aspects of being a fitness professional is to teach people how to achieve performance goals through intelligent movement mechanics. This means different things for each individual, but ultimately we can all benefit by practicing sound movement strategies. In my yoga classes, for example, we practice positions that enhance the performance of athletic endeavors as well as activities of daily living. There is a tremendous transfer of application from yoga postures to daily life. The physical aspect of yoga is not about flexibility as much as it is about mobility, and there is definitely a difference between the two. In CrossFit, we need a special focus on caring for the integrity of the shoulders and hips. We also need to take time regularly to check in with our bodies and explore any restrictions or limitations that could lead to future problems. When I teach yoga to CrossFitters, it’s always with the intent of having fun while tuning in to what the body needs at that particular time for dealing with life’s demands, whether it’s related to performance or leisure.

I recently uprooted my life in Chicago to experience the west coast! My husband of 4 years and two dogs tagged along for the adventure and so far it’s been quite a ride! Leaving my old gym was unbearably hard. I knew it would be impossible to replace but that there were other boxes out there for me to find and invest into next. Luckily, I discovered CrossFit Belltown! I now have the honor and pleasure of coaching the CFBT community and couldn’t be more thrilled.

I discovered CrossFit  through sport specific training for ultimate frisbee. Yes, frisbee! It’s a grueling endurance sport that I’ve played at the elite level for the past 6 years. I really enjoyed CrossFit from the first 3,2,1 GO- the intensity, challenge, competition and fight. However my coaching passion didn’t grow until I met Rudy Tapalla and trained at CrossFit Chicago. Rudy’s contagious coaching style got me hooked and inspired me to start on the path of becoming a coach. After a long interning process, then assistant coaching and finally lead coaching, I haven’t looked back.

My experience at CrossFit Chicago was truly amazing. I feel in love with sport, it’s community and all movements used in CrossFit. (Excluding thrusters…) In the past 4 years, I worked part time and then full time at CFC, competed at the Regional level and have participated in many seminars and certifications for further my knowledge. Coaching is a big passion of mine; like Carl Paoli says, I truly want athletes to ‘move like you care’. Not only does it make you more efficient and quick, but it will also provide a healthy longevity for athletes and their lives.

Dr. Raymond Sue has been a practicing Chiropractic Physician in Seattle since 2002. He did his undergrad work in Kinesiology and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. After working as an associate and having his own practice for many years, he made the exciting decision to join Airrosti Rehab , a group of evidence based healthcare providers based out of San Antonio, Texas and the Official Head of Athlete Services for both the Crossfit Regionals and Crossfit Games.

Dr. Sue combines his years of experience in injury rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, soft tissue treatment and his training in the Functional Movement System to help his patients, move better, feel better and most importantly perform better. He regularly provides injury assessments as well as mobility and coaches workshops to the Crossfit community.

When he’s not busy with his practice, you’ll find Dr. Sue enjoying the outdoors and training in the martial arts.

Favorite CrossFit Moment: A few years ago four young guys joined my old gym.They were excellent beer drinkers and smack talkers but not very good at crossfit. I told them the day all four of them beat me in a WOD I would buy dinner at the Met. It took about a year but that was a good day.
Why You Do CrossFit: There were lots of reasons at first but now it’s just plain fun, I love it.
