The Romanian Deadlift: What Is It And Why Is It Useful?
The Romanian Deadlift (or RDL for short) is a variation of the deadlift intended to increase strength in the hamstrings, glutes, and lower back by increasing the isolation of the hips to promote muscular hypertrophy (muscle growth) under a full range of motion. By hinging at the hips and keeping a flat back, we can maintain hamstring tension throughout the movement, which has immense carryover into movements such as the snatch and clean, as this mimics the pull in both lifts. It can also serve to improve lumbar stabilization in a bent position to create a stronger deadlift.
